Collected poems of Sri Aurobindo

Sri Aurobindo began writing poetry as a young man in England and continued to write it throughout his life.

His first poem was published in 1883, when he was eleven; his last poems were composed or revised more than sixty years later, during the late 1940s. This volume contains all the short and narrative poems in English published by Sri Aurobindo during his lifetime, all the complete poems found later among his manuscripts, and some incomplete poems as well. (His epic Savitri and several poetic dramas are published in other volumes.)

The poems are grouped into seven overlapping chronological parts. These parts include short poems, lyrical poems, sonnets, and several poems written as metrical experiments, as well as the narrative poems Urvasie and Love and Death and two poems in quantitative hexameters, Ilion and Abana. This collection of more than two hundred poems shows Sri Aurobindo's many-sided poetic achievement spanning seven decades. His innate capacity for poetic inspiration was heightened by his practice of Yoga, resulting in a new kind of poetry that revealed and expressed the truth and beauty of the higher realms of consciousness.
